ZEITGEIST ACQUIRES BETH B’S PORTRAIT OF HER MOTHER, RENOWNED ARTIST IDA APPLEBROOG
Zeitgeist Films has acquired CALL HER APPELBROOG, a documentary by Beth B about her mother Ida Applebroog, a painter, sculptor and filmmaker whose work often explores the themes of gender, sexual identity, violence and politics.
The film will open at the Metrograph Theater in June, with a national rollout to follow.
CALL HER APPLEBROOG is a poignant and intimate portrait of Applebroog, who grew up in an Orthodix Jewish household with an immigrant father who only wanted to have sons; instead there were three girls. It is a cathartic story of self-realization and the act of art-making as a life-saving parachute.
The film reveals Applebroog’s groundbreaking work and more intimately, it is about her dramatic struggle to overcome adversity—a story that Beth knows well.
Zeitgeist Co-Presidents Nancy Gerstman and Emily Russo said “we have known Beth B for a long time and could not admire her more as a pioneering, adventurous filmmaker. But to make such a loving film about someone who is so close to you is an even more extraordinary act of boldness.”
